Preview: The Game
by David Sue1/12/2006
THE world of American rap music has traditionally been peppered
with belligerence, rivalry and in-fighting.
Even so, 25-year-old California rapper Jayceon Taylor, aka The
Game, despite only arriving on the scene last year, can consider
himself a fully-registered member of the fight club.
His various altercations with the likes of Ja Rule, Jay-Z, Suge
Knight and 50 Cent may be predictable for any braggart young rap
upstart but as his name suggests, The Game fully understands the
value of pantomime and playful drama.
But besides reigniting classic, egomaniac hip hop rivalries, The
Game is certainly old school in other ways, too - particularly when
it comes to his music.
His grime sound and distinctive voice, coupled with hints of
Nineties old-school hip-hop, have marked him out as one of the
forerunners in America's hip hop new breed.
Having sold more than five million records worldwide, he's been
nominated for two Grammy awards and is undoubtedly American hip
hop's best advert for old values being presented with new,
(literally) punchier attitudes.
Hopefully, with this current world tour and a second, highly
acclaimed album The Doctor's Advocate just released,Taylor won't
need to sell himself off the back of other rappers' (easily riled)
egos.
The Game, it seems, has raised the stakes.
The Game are at The Apollo on Monday.
