Magic goes on
10/11/2006
AS proven by their walk-out on Top Of The Pops last year, after
presenter Richard Bacon labelled them "a big, fat melting pot of
talent", The Magic Numbers may be jovial, happy-go-lucky types, but
they also have a dark, militant side to them.
And so it proves furthermore with the release of a second album
Those The Brokes, released earlier this month.
Loosening up their one-dimensional image as a feelgood, summer
festival pop band, it's an album which transplants the Magic
Numbers into darker, more - well - wintry environs, charting broken
romance with a lyrical world weariness.
All is not as magic as it once was.
Nonetheless, it's the band's own unashamed ability to uplift which
made them (after the infamous Richard Bacon incident) such the
defining sound of summer 2005.
Their single Forever Lost became a summer anthem, while the band's
own decidedly un-rock 'n' roll image as bearded, self-effacing,
peace lovers endeared them to the public and celebrity fans like
Brian Wilson.
It's in the live arena where the band's sense of fun and feelgood
really shines through, right down to them performing their own
unique version of Beyoncé Knowles' Crazy In Love.
The best summer pop band around might be entering their winter of
heartache but this is a band for whom spring is always just around
the corner.
They play the Apollo tomorrow (Saturday)
