The big picture: street art

A window display is ensuring new artwork is seen by people who wouldn't normally go to a gallery. Conrad Astley took a look.

ART has been brought out of the gallery and literally onto the street, thanks to a city centre window display.

The art window, at the Direct Line offices opposite The Opera House on Quay Street, has been attracting admiring glances from passing office workers and workmen from a nearby construction site.It has been set up by Art In The City, which started as an online gallery used to promote North West artists.

The not-for-profit organisation now has dozens of artists on its directory, as well as arranging regular exhibitions and sponsoring the degree show for Manchester Metropolitan University's embroidery department, while the site has received over a million visitors.

Their exhibitions, held at the Dukes 92 bar in Castlefield, have been intended to bring art to people who would not normally set foot in a gallery.

Now they have gone one step further with the window gallery which has been open since January.

It holds work by new artists on seven-week cycles and Art In The City's founder Sylvia Swiffin has planned a full programme running until next January. She says the latest artists to be displayed there are a diverse pair - Jo Scorah and Hasan Dhaimish.

Hasan, who was born in Libya but now teaches art at Nelson College in Lancashire, usually works on canvas and screen print. His pictures often express his fascination with jazz, as well as his past and memories of his cultural heritage.

Jo works from her studio in Bowdon, Cheshire, is a recent graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Design, and is interested in fashion and celebrating the beauty of the body. Although her background is in embroidery, she attempts to fuse fine art with dress making, producing one-off garments or creating paintings which are embellished with print and stitch.

The artists' work will be on display until April 7.
