The big picture: Cartoon capers
Rachel Broady2/ 3/2006
THEY are supposed to be toys but some of them are far too
terrifying for any child to play with.
The work is by New York-based artist Dalek, whose graphic design
and vinyl toys are considered the inspiration for a global art
phenomenon that is gaining credibility among critics.
Violent Pacification features 40 of Dalek's new paintings, up to
3ft by 4ft in size, alongside toys. The works are inspired by
graffiti, cartoons, sci-fi, b-movies, tattoo art, computer games
and music videos.
He began work as a commercial toy designer and quickly became one
of the most sought-after artists in the urban vinyl scene. He has
also worked for Nike, Levis, Calvin Klein and Rookie
Skateboards.
Dalek's fame is growing and his figures and prints, which cost up
to £100 a few years ago, now fetch tens of thousands of
pounds.
Violent Pacification is at Richard Goodall Gallery from
March 24 until April 29.
