Preview: Noble Humour

ROSS Noble has avoided the hackneyed career comedy route which usually ends with a post as a scripted predictable telly joker because he prefers life off-screen.

So the chance to catch his live show at The Lowry is probably one not to be missed, especially for anyone who's caught his all-too-brief radio appearances on shows like Radio Four's Just a Minute.

The floppy-haired Geordie is only 29, but has built up a wealth of experience on stage having started performing at the age of 15, when he used to have to leave licenced premises by the back door as soon as his set was over.

Nowadays, he's an accomplished gag-meister and his annual tours - with a different set each year since 2000 - attract critical acclaim.

And he has said he hopes to go on for as long as Billy Connolly, so there's lots more to come.

The latest show, Randomist, started out with a series of dates around the Scottish Highlands and is destined for a stint at the Theatre Royal in London's West End, so there ought to be something for everyone.

Ross Noble plays the Opera House on Friday.
