Review: Little Britain @ The Apollo

NOT many among us would dare tell a bunch of Mancunian blokes to
"shut up or you'll get beatings", but Vicky Pollard got the
friendliest response to that line I've ever seen.
But almost anything outrageous would have drawn a round of
belly-laughs from a crowded Apollo as Little Britain Live saw all
the now-classic catchphrases and characters brought to life on
stage and the audience lapped it up with screams of glee and
continual applause.
Speaking of belly laughs, much was made of the idea that Mancunians
might be prone to being slightly rotund, and `fatties' were dragged
out of the audience on two occasions to add to the merciless
mirth.
Audience participation also added a little extra to the TV staples,
with one audience member hiding a sausage in his trousers while
"Wicky Woo" entertainer Des Kaye probed his groin area.
The show ran the gamut of all the favourites, including
transvestite Emily Howard, Lou and Andy, Marjorie Dawes and Bubbles
De Vere, and the crowd were still screaming for more when Dafydd -
the only gay in the village - closed the show accompanied by
nipple-tasselled dancers.
I'm not sure how much their reception says about the sophistication
of Mancunian tastes, but Little Britain will certainly be welcomed
back when the show returns in March.
