Days Out: Rocky Horror Show, Urbis, Halloween
Conrad Astley28/10/2005
Urbis museum is the place for family fun during weekends until
December.
Youngsters can take the glass sky-lift to levels two, three and
four to explore the modern city through a series of interactive
exhibits.
They can also call into the control zone to find themselves caught
on camera, and create an identity card to take home.
And the whole family can take part in workshop where children can
let their creativity run riot.
If the kids fancy themselves as rock stars they can take part in
special events held from noon until 3pm every Saturday until
December 17.
They can strike a pose for the next album cover, get dressed up,
have their faces painted, and even get a photo to keep.
Booking is recommended.
The Let's Rock! event costs £2.50
per child.
A HALLOWEEN weekend of mischief - including an opportunity to
burn your past - is being held in the city centre.
The acts at the Arndale will include the Circus of Horrors'
daredevil madman The Phantom, wowing the crowd with dangerous and
breathtaking stunts.
There will also be the Girl in a Bottle act - which needs no
explanation - fire and ghost dancers, the Dead Men in Coats comedy
double act, De Los Meurtos Samba group, a Manchester-born
break-dancer, flamenco dancers, knife jugglers and the acrobatic
Dancers of the Dead.
Youngsters can be spooked out with ghostly storytelling sessions in
Exchange Square from midday on Sunday, with a witch regaling them
with tales of ghastly goings-on.
There will also be entertainment including wizards, devils,
face-painters, stilted spooks, bats, Victorian games, musicians and
horse-chestnut stands.
Meanwhile, ghost hunters of all ages can join special 40 minute
ghost tours later in the day, from 3-5.20pm. The tours will leave
every 10 minutes, and will include tales of necromancer John Dee,
the Manchester Mummy, and even a lesson on how to make the dead
speak. Ghost tours tickets must be booked by calling the Library
Theatre Box Office on 236 7110. Tickets cost £3.50 for adults,
while children go free.
The weekend will culminate with the ancient pagan ritual of burning
your past.
Anyone can attend the past-burning ritual, taking place at Exchange
Square from 5.30-7.30pm on Sunday. Simply write down the name of an
ex, boss, teacher, mother-in-law, or teacher you would like to
forget, and throw them into the pyre, along with letters and
photos, clearing the way for a happier year ahead.
Meanwhile, events are also taking place at The Lowry Outlet Mall in
Salford Quays.
Youngsters can mingle with 9ft alien Skitzo from noon until 4pm
today (Friday) with a fancy dress competition judged at 1pm.
Frankenstein's monster will appear during a giant pumpkin show from
2-4pm on Saturday, while children can have their faces painted as
their favourite spooky character from 12-4pm on Sunday.
IT'S just a step to the left ...
Exchange Square will be transformed into a freak fest this weekend
as the Rocky Horror Picture Show is beamed from the BBC's big
screen.
The original 70s glam musical, featuring performances from Tim
Curry, Meat Loaf and Susan Sarandon, is being shown to celebrate
the show's 30th anniversary.
It is also being screened by the Urbis museum as part of their
exhibition of photographer Mick Rock's work.
Rock was the show's official stills photographer, as well as taking
iconic pictures of stars like David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed,
and the museum is currently exhibiting a retrospective of his work,
spanning four decades.
Boys and girls are invited to don wigs, fishnets, suspenders, high
heels, feather boas or whatever other glamorous threads take their
fancy.
Audience participation is definitely a feature of the show, and
there will be members of Time Warp, the official Rocky Horror fan
club, on site to help any first-timers through the
call-and-response lines the musical has become famous for.
Dressing up is optional, but an original Mick Rock print will be
presented to the best dressed on the night.
The festivities will start at Exchange Square's BBC big screen at
8pm.
