MUSIC: The Verve, Manchester Central, Dec 20-21

EVER since The Verve announced their reformation in the summer, there’s been a large amount of cynicism surrounding their motives.
Indeed, just over a year ago, in this very publication, frontman (and then solo artist) Richard Ashcroft firmly insisted: “There’s more chance of all four Beatles getting back together than The Verve reforming.”
The term ‘predictable’ was never in The Verve’s vocabulary, which makes this latest comeback a truly mouth-watering proposition.
Emerging from Wigan in the early Nineties, The Verve always provided music and rhetoric at odds with their British indie contemporaries. Led by swaggering and eccentric frontman Ashcroft, the band’s death-wish hedonism indie-rock was electrifying but also very volatile. Their third album Urban Hymns made them superstars but the band split in 1999.
With Ashcroft pursuing a solo career, The Verve’s story should have been well and truly over. But as we said, they’ve never been predictable.
Reforming in the summer and then giving away new material online, the reformed Verve look focused, street-smart and determined to make as big an impression on the Noughties music scene as they did in the Nineties.
Expectation is high – but when it comes to The Verve, don’t expect them to stick to the script.
