WE HAD a fantastic response from our readers in October 2007 following our feature on the Avenue Cinema which once stood at the junction of Rochdale Road and Victoria Avenue.

The cinema brought in a collection of memories along with photos and memorabilia. One lady said: “My late husband Tom took me to the Avenue on our very first date, I can remember it as if it were yesterday, it was the start of a long and happy relationship.”

THIS week in the second part of our 'Bygone news stories' we take a stroll through Hopwood, the formation of the Cricket Club, an absent minded painter who placed his wooden ladder in a stream and two people who sustained injuries from animals. Around the time of the First World War there was once a rifle range at Middleton Junction. I have never seen any images of this range but several reports can be found within this newspaper. Our associated photo published this week is courtesy of Harold Whitworth.

LAST month we had a fantastic response following the publication of a 1960s school photo sent in by John Flynn from Lincoln.
